Among the many artists that helped inject a pan-global flavor into American pop music is Enigma (A.K.A. Michael Cretu), a German artist who brought the sound of chanting Gregorian monks to the charts with "Sadeness (Part I)," a breakout smash from Enigma's 1990 debut MCMXC a.d.   When Love Finds You
A country singer who melts hearts with his voice, and not with tight jeans and a big hat, is a rare commodity. Vince Gill, who possesses one of the most beautiful voices in popular music, effectively distills the varied elements of country music's roots and has become Nashville's leading man.
Gill, a bluegrass virtuoso and rock guitar master (he was asked to join Dire Straits), has created a niche for himself as the man who best gives voice to the pain of heartache and longing through his spine-tingling high notes. This Oklahoma tenor melds his harmonies with the likes of Patty Loveless and Trisha Yearwood and comes out with a single-voiced backdrop for some of country's most intense heartbreak ballads.
His athletic guitar solos on the up-beat cuts, "What The Cowgirls Do" and "South Side Of Dixie" (a Southern version of "California Girls"), are a perfect counterpoint to the soaring, soulful, ethereal ballads like "When Love Finds You." Vince and his wife, Janis (of Sweethearts Of The Rodeo), even share an autobiographical writing collaboration on "Maybe Tonight."

Like Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone, and many of the more exciting artists carelessly lumped under the banner of "neo-soul," Raheem DeVaughn has soaked up a world of musical influences (that includes, of course, the winding history of rhythm & blues) to arrive at his debut record, THE LOVE EXPERIENCE. The son of jazz cellist Abdul Wadud, Devaughn was born into music, and that heritage is far from lost on the inherently soulful singer.

Talk about talent. Lou Rawls had the most beautiful deep and smooth voice and this album shows the best of his best. His songs are great . All the music here is brilliant and very very classic. It's good bedroom music or nice easy listening when you want to chill out.

  Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing
The album has a steady, even feel to it but it gets an extra kick with the foot-stomping hoe down of "Raise the Barn." Featuring Ronnie Dunn on vocals, the song was inspired by the spirit of New Orleans when the city chose to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina's devastation. "Raise the Barn" celebrates that down-but-not-done determination that showed the city's courage.
One of Urban's biggest tributes to love comes with "God Made Woman," a track that captures him with his heart and his eyes wide open. The song revels in the beauty of women and compares some of God's other handiwork with what Urban clearly considers God's finest innovation. It's a cute song, and the children's choir at the beginning of the track is a nice touch. Then Urban follows that up with "Tu Compania" (which in English means "Your Company"), another love song in which he again celebrates the power of two.
Saving some of his strongest emotions for last, he closes out the disc with a simple track called "Got It Right This Time." It's just Keith, a keyboard and a drum machine on this track, which, on such a musically rich album, makes the track stand out for that reason alone. But the simple song says so much; it is a reflection of all the disappointments that lie behind him and a song of hope for the future. Having found the love of a lifetime, he now believes they can weather any storm together. Listening to it, it's impossible not to hope that he's right -- for his sake as well as ours. |
